Job Shadow Program

Lincoln Children’s Zoo Job Shadow Program
Thank you for your interest in the Lincoln Children’s Zoo Job Shadow Program. Your job shadow is an important step toward learning about a career in zoo keeping. Please read the information below carefully and follow the application instructions at the bottom of the page. Please note that space is limited for students with school requirement only. Slots are filled on a first come, first served basis for those submitting completed applications.

What will I do on a job shadow?
No two days are alike at the Zoo, so every job shadow is a unique experience. You will be assigned to a zookeeper who will take you along on their daily rounds as they clean and feed zoo animals. Depending on the type of animals they care for, you may be able to help prepare food, deliver food, and assist with cleaning. Job shadow students are only permitted to work with animals that are chosen by the zookeeper.

What should I bring?
Most importantly, bring your enthusiasm and love of learning. Zookeepers work outdoors in all types of weather, so please dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. This includes closed-toe shoes (sandals are not permitted), jeans or khakis, shirt, coat or jacket if necessary. Don’t forget a hat and gloves if it’s cold outside. Also, be prepared to make the most of your job shadow by bringing a list of questions you’d like to ask the zookeeper.

Who can apply?
Job shadows are open to students 11th grade in high school through college. Students must be 16 years or older.

When should I apply?
Allow at least two weeks for the application and scheduling process. Please be flexible. We may not be able to accommodate the exact date you request.

Is there a cost?
There is a $20 program fee due the day of the job shadow. You will receive a confirmation email after submitting your application. Please email with any questions.

How do I apply?
Read the application information carefully and note days and times that the Job Shadows are offered. Submit your completed application form at least two weeks in advance of your anticipated job shadow date.
