Volunteer Opportunities

Lincoln Children's Zoo is a non-profit organization that receives no city or state dollars to operate. The Zoo relies entirely on the sale of memberships, admissions, private rentals and donations from individuals and corporations.

With the help of volunteers, the Zoo can stretch its operating funds to the fullest potential and provide a wonderful atmosphere for its animals and Zoo guests.

Zoo areas that need your help:
(if you have a specialized trade or idea that you think the Zoo could benefit from please do not hesitate to suggest)

Animal Department
Prepare meals for the Zoo's animal population.  Duties include chopping, dicing, and cutting up fruits and vegetables.

Horticulture Department
Master Gardeners please sign up to help us take care of our numerous plants, flowers and trees. Other duties include racking, planting, watering, etc.

Facilities/Maintenance Department
Help the facilities department maintain the Zoo grounds. Duties may include painting, cleaning, buidling, etc.

Education Department
The education department needs summer class teachers and assistants and volunteers. If bugs are your thing we have a spot for you in the Bug Buddy exhibit.

Administration Department
Clerical Duties - filing, stuffing envelopes, etc
Visitors Services - greeters, pricing and stocking gift shop inventory, etc

Butterfly Pavilion - open from the first of June until mid-September.  Volunteers are needed to sit among the plants, flowers and butterflies to interact with Zoo guests as they travel through the exhibit. Training will be provided.

Train Engineers and Safety Conductors
How about engineering the train and/or serving as train safety conductor?  Conductors must be over the age of 16 and engineers must have a valid drivers license and be 18 years or older.   Training is required and offered several times prior to the Zoo's open season.

Of course, there are many other areas that are a great deal of fun.  How about strolling through the Zoo and answering questions and getting acquainted with not only the animals but also the visitors.

Stop in at the Zoo office anytime during regular office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday to fill out a volunteer application. If you have questions call the Zoo office at 475.6741.
