Emu
(Dromaius novahollandiae)

These large, shaggy birds have loose double feathers. Their neck and legs are long, but their wings are tiny. They are flightless birds. They are fast runners with lots of strength in their legs. The average adult height is 6 feet tall with an average weight of 110 pounds.

What do emus eat? Where do they live?
Emus eat seeds, fruits, flowers, leaves, and grains. They live in the wild only in Australia.

Do they make noise?
Female emus make a drumming sound in their throat when they are excited. Males don’t make any sounds.

What about emu eggs?
The males incubate the eggs, even driving the female away after the eggs hatch. The eggs are large with green, pebbly shells. When cooked they taste just like chicken eggs.
